in memory of alferdo M. Punzalan

Our dear Ama and Lolo, Alfredo M. Punzalan, 94, died Saturday, October 13 in Fullerton, California. He is survived by five children, eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. His wife of sixty-two years, Nelly F. Punzalan, preceded him in death in 2007 as did a son earlier this year.

"Freddy" was born May 25, 1924 in Panasahan, Malolos Bulacan. When he was 17, World War II descended on the Philippines. He fled home with his brothers to avoid capture by the Japanese forces, eventually joining the 45th Infantry Regiment, Reizar Regiment, and rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During the war, he was initially responsible for intelligence and propaganda activities in Bulocan. By 1945, he was in Manila following some of the fiercest fighting before the Japanese surrender where he was responsible for securing food and ammunition.
